DSEAR risk assessments for laboratories, research facilities and testing environments
Research and laboratory environments typically operate with smaller quantities of hazardous substances than large industrial sites, but still present DSEAR risks due to the nature of materials used and the way they are handled.
Typical risk areas include:
- Use of flammable solvents such as ethanol, acetone and laboratory chemicals
- Storage and decanting of flammable liquids
- Compressed and pressurised gas systems
- Gas distribution to laboratory or cleanroom equipment
- Waste solvent handling and storage
- Ventilation systems and local exhaust ventilation (LEV)
- Experimental or development processes
- Battery systems and hydrogen generation
A key feature of laboratory environments is that hazardous substances are often contained within vessels, systems or equipment. However, risks can still arise during activities such as decanting, sampling, maintenance or waste handling, where vapours may be released.
Many laboratory solvents produce vapours that are heavier than air and can accumulate at low levels if ventilation is insufficient. Similarly, pressurised gases used in research or cleanroom environments must be carefully controlled to prevent leaks or accumulation.
Because of the controlled nature of these environments, effective ventilation, containment and procedural controls are often the primary means of managing risk. This includes the use of fume cupboards, LEV systems, gas detection and well-defined operating procedures.
Our DSEAR assessments review how substances are stored, handled and used in practice, including ventilation performance, gas systems, ignition control, maintenance and operational procedures. Where required, hazardous area classification is applied, particularly around storage, decanting or gas handling areas.
The result is a clear, practical report that supports safe laboratory operation while ensuring compliance with DSEAR.
