The Challenge
The Port of Tyne at South Shields required a DSEAR survey to be undertaken for the coal plant operations on-site. The coal transfer plant was a key focus of the survey as these operations invariably create a lot of residual coal dust.
The Solution provided
The risk of ignition is always likely where coal dust is routinely handled especially airborne dust or particulate build up in conveyor systems.
A detailed risk assessment was completed to cover the coal storage and transfer systems including all conveyors, rollers and motors used to transfer coal from the ships to a designated storage area.
As coal dust will ignite and burn readily it was important that specific controls were in place to minimise any risks; a detailed report and series of improvement actions were presented to management. The report also included hazardous zoning requirements to be implemented across the operations.
