The challenge:
Hellermann Tyton contacted the Mesh office with a requirement for prompt DSEAR assistance following an insurance assessor’s visit. Our consultant team was able to rapidly respond and attended the client site to carry out the DSEAR RA in June 2016.
The site’s core business is manufacture of plastic cable management accessories for the trade and retail markets. Factory operations involve potentially-hazardous substances (nylon 66 granules and dust) but are not especially complex and / or have purpose-designed process controls. There is some storage and handling of marginally combustible materials, but no significant dispensing of flammable liquid or gas applies on-site. Additionally, accumulation of some combustible / flammable particulate materials, including waste, may add slightly to the residual DSEAR hazard at the premises.
The solution provided:
An assessment of the site was carried out in compliance with the DSEAR regulations 2002, as amended in June 2015 for compressed gases and corrosives.
Hazardous Area Classification was recorded for those areas where a flammable atmosphere may persist either briefly or for longer periods of time as outlined in the regulations – specifically those associated with extensive plastic granule handling on site. The main concerns were around fine nylon flyings and static charging during conveying.
The report and recommendations looked at practical ways in which regulatory guidance could be implemented; most often with minimal down-time for the busy manufacturing operations at site.
From enquiry to delivery of finished report was within 40 days, and the client has been able to demonstrate improvements to satisfy the insurer’s requirements.
What Hellermann Tyton said:
I contacted MESH to conduct a DSEAR assessment at our Plastic injection moulding site in Manchester. From the first point of contact we found everyone polite, professional and inviting. The expertise and professionalism of the consultant who attended was exemplary with through explanation of the whole process. The report was received within a timely manner and was one of the best DSEAR reports I have had. The report was easily understood and recommendations set out to enable us to work through improvement. We will definitely be returning in the future. Samantha Thirling HSE Officer
