The Challenge
A visit was made to Coryton Commercials site at Purfleet, Essex on 27th April 2015 to consider compliance in respect of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
The Purfleet site is an established commercial vehicle repair facility providing specialist maintenance services to a range of clients. The DSEAR focus is primarily upon arrangements for flammable substances that may arise in the operation of purpose-designed workshop facilities used for repair and refurbishment of commercial vehicles. Other specific areas include potential sources of fuel, flammable storage and other site service arrangements.
The business had been requested to organise a DSEAR assessment as part of an audit associated to a large contract they were working towards.
The solution provided
A range of processes involved the use of flammable liquids, gases and had the potential to generate combustible/flammable dusts.
A full detailed analysis of the site operations was undertaken to determine where any potential DSEAR risks existed; this was clearly laid out in an easy to folow report format. The review looked at operational practices and the control procedures the business was working with.
From the above Hazardous area clasification was confirmed and simple diagrams provided to pictorially show the extent of the zones to be applied.
A number of recommendations were clearly laid out for the business to follow; these were prioritised to guide the business towards full DSEAR compliance.
