The Challenge
A visit was made to British Bakels site in Bicester in December 2017 to review existing safety arrangements under DSEAR.
The site produces dry ingredients for the bakery industry and as such handles considerable quantities of flour, sugar and flammable liquid flavourings. Additionally for GMP and hygiene purposes, the site stores and handles corrosive and toxic substances.
The Solution Provided
A full survey and review of existing arrangements against DSEAR with subsequent gap analysis indicated where over time, focus had been lost and slight plant improvements had placed the operation at risk. It is often the case that management of change does not fully consider DSEAR aspects.
Clear recommendations were made to improve technical and organisational preventative and protective measures. especially around powder handling, and correct separation of incompatible chemicals
