The Challenge

Ashbury Chocolates had a visit from the HSE who wanted to see an up to date DSEAR assessment for the sugar silo at the site in Corby. The business had previously had an assessment but this was now out of date and the inspector had given the business 4 weeks to get it updated.

Sugar can produce a dust residue and the focus of the assessment was on how this was controlled through the delivery, storage and usage processes at the site.

The Solution

We had to quickly arrange a site survey to go through the processes where sugar was involved and worked closely with the site maintenance and health & safety management to consider where any risks may exist. The key was to identify if there were situations where a flammable atmosphere could develop and to report on what additional controls would be needed to ensure both the safety of personnel and the business as a whole.

By providing a detailed but easy to follow report; management were able to quickly address the improvement actions and satisfy the HSE inspector. A key aspect of the DSEAR report is to identifying what if any zoning is required and to make it clear what is needed to keep these areas safe.
