An explosion at a flour mill in Texas, US killed one person and left three others with serious injuries on 23 July. The incident happened at a facility operated by Panhandle Milling in the town of Dawn in Deaf Smith County, around 34 miles (55 km) southwest of Amarillo.
The Amarillo Fire Department was called to the scene shortly after 04:00 following reports of an explosion. Several other nearby fire departments also responded, including the Dawn Volunteer Fire Department. Emergency services arrived at the scene to find a visible fire and debris scattered across the nearby area.
The blaze was quickly contained while several bush fires were extinguished. Three people were treated at the scene and transported to nearby medical facilities. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters entered the mill and conducted a search and rescue operation. They found the body of a worker who was later confirmed to be 36-year-old Melissa Mungia, a Panhandle Milling employee.
The condition of the three injured workers is unknown, however all three suffered burn injuries. An investigation has been opened by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine the cause of the explosion
