A sewage tank exploded in Connecticut, US on 22 October after flammable gas found an ignition source. Fortunately, state police said no one was injured in the incident and there was no fire as a result.

The explosion happened at around 11:45 at a site operated by the Water Pollution Control Authority in the town of Bantam near Litchfield, Connecticut. The Bantam and Litchfield Fire Departments, as well as paramedics, were called to the scene following reports of a sewer tank explosion.

Upon arrival, employees told emergency services that a flammable gas explosion had occurred in a sludge tank containing 190,000 litres of sewage. While there was no fire, firefighters closed the area and immediately metered the affected area for flammable and toxic gases and surveyed for any structural damage.

Bantam Fire Department said it is hypothesised that flammable “sewer gas”, a byproduct of decomposition, had found an ignition source and caused the explosion. A full investigation is underway.
