An explosion at an explosives manufacturing facility in southern Poland killed one person and injured another on January 14. The blast happened in the town of Bierun at a factory belonging to Nitroerg, a manufacturer of explosives and initiation systems.

Local news sites reported that the blast was heard and felt in several nearby towns as far as 20 kilometres away. A spokesperson for the local fire department said that the explosion took place outdoors on the grounds of Nitroerg’s facility.

The person injured in the incident was an employee at the plant and is reported to be in a serious condition and was rushed to a local hospital. Another worker was confirmed to have died at the scene.

Polish news site Gazeta.pl reports quotes a local fire official as saying the incident occurred in a “combustion site” where semi-finished products for the production of explosives were stored.

There is no threat to the local environments and a fire caused by the blast did not spread beyond the immediate area. Police have opened an investigation into the explosion.
