Five workers were hospitalised after an explosion at a fertiliser factory in New Zealand on October 6. The blast happened in Dunedin on New Zealand’s south eastern coast at a factory belonging to Ravensdown.
The five people taken to hospital were all released after a few hours. New Zealand’s workplace health and safety regulator WorkSafe was informed and an investigation has been opened to find the cause behind the explosion.
According to Radio New Zealand, Ravensdown said an initial investigation suggested the incident happened after residual dust ignited. A spokesperson for the company said that there was no fire as a result of the explosion.
The injured workers are thought to have inhaled sulphur dioxide after a small dust cloud was formed by the blast.
