West Midlands Police said that a worker died following an industrial accident at a recycling plant in Oldbury, west of Birmingham, on August 7. The man suffered ‘very serious burns’ in the incident at the Innovative Environmental Solutions factory and subsequently died, emergency services confirmed. Two other workers also sustained burns in the incident and were in a stable condition.
Recycling plants are required to undertake DSEAR assessments to ensure control measures are in place to prevent incidents such as this. Unfortunately many fail to realise the potential for fires and explosions in their operations and fail to control flammable vapours, gases and dusts as required.
