The challenge
The Health, Safety and Environmental Officer at the Blanco Aero Industries UK Ltd, Rugby required the site DSEAR assessment to be updated. Although they had previously had an assessment from another consultancy he was concerned there may be areas under the DSEAR regulations where they were not meeting the standards required.
Some 320 members of staff are employed at the Butters Leap, Rugby facility which operates 24/7 manufacturing, to very high standards, aeronautical fasteners and assembly components. The business places very high standards on keeping all H&S issues controlled to both keep its employees safe and to ensure all legislative requirements are being met.
The Solution provided
The site operations involve the use of a number of highly flammable substances and some flammable gases. The DSEAR survey considered these substances with particular attention being paid to the plating activities, painting (using MEK) and the associated handling, transport and storage of associated materials.
It was found that the current controls in place were to high standard but a number of further actions could be implemented to enable the company to further improve to achieve current best practice. The survey involved working closely with the in-house H&S team, maintenance and process operators.
As the business had such high standards it was found that many good practices were already being employed; however a number of improvement recommendations were identified. These were presented back to the H&S team and helped direct the business to make the improvements; these included improvements to extraction systems, process procedures and materials handling.
The reports were very detailed and concise and in a format that was easy to follow. We will be looking to use you again in the future.
