One person was killed by a chemical explosion at a plant in North Carlolina on 22 June. The incident happened at a factory operated by Darling Ingredients, which repurpose animal byproducts, in the town of Wadesboro, around 50 miles (80km) southeast of Charlotte.

The explosion happened at around 21:00 local time when Anson Country Emergency Service were called to the Darling Ingredients plant. Air monitoring was conducted to determine whether it was safe for emergency personnel to enter the facility. After ensuring the atmosphere was safe, paramedics and firefighters entered the site where they confirmed that one worker had died.

Officials said that initial indications suggest that the blast involved aluminium chloride. The explosion happened in a part of the plant where unusable parts of slaughtered animals are rendered down into usable byproducts. The area of the facility where the explosion happened has been shutdown while an investigation is carried out.
